Normally, I can count on an Eve Dallas book to be a quick, suspenseful ride, but this one? Not so much. The suspense plot felt lackluster, a lot of smoke and mirrors without much in the way of substance. Mavis' appearances felt thrown in, just for the sake of having them there. Even Dr. Mira's appearance was brief and brought little meaning to the story. One could tell that this wasn't Eve's forte at all, so I have to wonder why she was lead on the case in the first place, even with the villains demanding her to be at the lead for the case. The one bright spot in this story was the byplay between McNabb and Peabody that wound up finally exploding. That was entertaining, and I can't wait to rediscover what happens next between them! All in all, this felt like a filler book, so hopefully the next one will be better!
