Geekomancy (Ree Reyes #1)

Geekomancy - Michael R. Underwood

I had really hoped to like this book. On one hand, I really enjoyed the world building and geek squeeing I did over the pop culture references, but on the other hand, I found myself having to force myself to keep reading it!

Ree herself is full of snark, going for a Gin Blanco of Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series kind of feeling, but it got to be too much, like that was all she had was the snark. Her supporting characters were colorful, but at the same time totally out of place for the genre. It felt like the author was trying to cram every cliché about being a geek into this one book!

The one saving grace in this is that the pace of the story moved very quickly, so that I finished it within a day. I'll likely give the second book a shot, but I'm preparing for another tedious read.
